Indian Creek Awarded AFCEA Grant to Benefit Seventh and Eighth Grade STEM Curriculum

With tremendous gratitude, Indian Creek School is proud to announce that our seventh and eighth grade Science program has been awarded a grant from the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) of Central Maryland. The AFCEA has awarded ICS a $4,483.64 grant, which has been used to purchase equipment to help our seventh and eighth grade teachers take our computer science, coding, and engineering curriculum to new heights. AFCEA has had a positive and lasting impact on Indian Creek’s academic programming and student experience for the past four years. The organization played a key role in strengthening our capacity to pursue transformative opportunities for our Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) programs for children from 3 to 18 years old.

Through the generosity of the AFCEA, Indian Creek’s Pre-Kindergarten through sixth grade students, as well as our ninth through twelfth grade students, have been afforded countless STEM learning opportunities. This year’s gift benefits students in grades seven and eight to foster similar dedication for exploring interdisciplinary applications of the STEM subjects.

Indian Creek’s middle grade students have an insatiable curiosity to learn by doing and acquire knowledge by experiencing. Thanks to this incredible gift from the AFCEA, they now have sophisticated computer science and coding equipment to motivate their learning while inspiring a love for STEM.   The funds from this grant have allowed Indian Creek to buy six Sphero Bolts, six Makey Makeys, a Strawbees Coding and Robotics School Kit, and a Cubelets Creative Constructors Plus Pack - all products that require students to apply their understanding of computational thinking concepts to solving real world problems. Whether it is using the Sphero Bolts to paint and code a masterpiece or coding a prototype to solve a problem our middle grade students face in the school or global community, the possibilities are endless with how each of these technology tools can be used within the curriculum and what students will be able to create with them.

Indian Creek educators understand the benefits of exposing all our students from 3 to 18 years of age to concepts such as computational thinking, iterative thinking, and applying their STEM knowledge across disciplines. As the world around us continues to shift, we at ICS are always grappling with the question of how best to prepare our kids for a future that differs greatly from our present. With the continued support of the AFCEA, we are confident in our ability to help shape the next generation of creators, inventors, and change makers. These gifts will help Indian Creek graduates to be successful in college and launch into amazing careers. Thank you to the AFCEA for sharing in the bold vision of Indian Creek School, and for the significant difference the organization has made for our students over the past 4 years.
