Katie Spencer '21 Wins 2019 Indian Creek Poetry Out Loud Title
On Wednesday, December 4, the Upper School student body gathered in the Jack and Nancy Becker Center for a favorite event of the year: Indian Creek School's (ICS) 2019 Poetry Out Loud Recitation! 17 students in grades 7-12 took the stage to perform recitations. This year, sophomore Katie Spencer won with her recitations of “Diameter” by Michelle Y. Burke and “No I Wasn’t Meant to Love and Be Loved” by Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib.
While the official Poetry Out Loud competition starts at ninth grade, six ICS seventh and eighth grade students volunteered to participate as well. Eighth grade students Lucy Clifton, Ranee O’Connor, Lucas Pardo, and Anna Porter, along with seventh grade students Sophia O’Connell and Kat Rini all gave impressive performances. In this category, Kat Rini won first place with her recitation of "The Road not Taken," by Robert Frost, while Anna Porter placed second with her rendering of "Ways of Talking” by Ha Jin.
11 Contestants in grades 9-12 each recited two poems, whose scores were combined for the final competition. Julia Argilan ’23, Becca Colley '22, Kaiya Collins '22, Annabelle Derrick '21, Kamrynn Hobbs ’23, Jay Krizan ’20, Nick Menendez '22, Ava Rouse ’21, Abby Stephens ’21, and Kat Winstead ’23 joined Katie to give inspiring performances.
Katie will represent Indian Creek in the county Poetry Out Loud competition in a few weeks. The ICS runner up Annabelle Derrick will take her place if she is unable to compete, with third place winner Nick Menendez next in line. Winners from the county competition move on to compete at the state and national levels where scholarship prizes are awarded. Best wishes to Katie Spencer as she continues the legacy of Poetry Out Loud success at Indian Creek School!
