Indian Creek Student Leaders Attend Baltimore Student Diversity Leadership Conference
Indian Creek sent a strong contingent of young leaders to represent the School at The Baltimore Student Diversity Leadership Conference at Gilman School last Saturday, November 9. Equity and Inclusion Team members Mr. Todd Kerr and Mr. Douglass McCuiston travelled with Portia Fernandes '21, Kamrynn Hobbs '23, Sydney Kornmeyer '21, Elàn Martin '22, and Abby Stephens '22 this event, which aims to develop high school student leaders in the areas of diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice. This grassroots conference has existed for over twenty years under the dedicated leadership of teachers and students who are a part of the Association of Independent Maryland & DC Schools (AIMS).
Highlights from this year's conference included an inspiring message from keynote speaker Katie Sarai Arevalo, youth activist for Baltimore Algebra Project, and student-led workshops on systemic racism, gender equity, LGBT identity, mindfulness and wellness, climate justice, key political issues, global activism and more. The group also enjoyed a live concert and open mic talent presentation.
While the students were at their workshop, Mr. Kerr and Mr. McCuiston attended the Teachers' workshop, which centered around the theme "When Treating all of the Kids the Same is the Problem." The 2019 BSDLC Conference was an inspiring event for all who attended. Thank you to Gilman School for hosting.
