Creek Defeats Mt. Carmel for First Time Since 2014 Championship Game to Run Conference Record to 5-0

The Indian Creek Eagles took the field against the Mount Carmel Cougars on Tuesday, October 15, and came away with a huge 4-1 away victory over a conference opponent that had dominated the Eagles in recent years. It was a total team effort for the Creek as four players scored and three others provided assists.

The Eagles came out in a 4-2-3-1 formation looking to stop the Cougars from scoring and find goals on counter attacks. The first 10 minutes saw some chances for both teams, but neither team could muster a shot. Mount Carmel finally found the back of the net when forward Toby Nnadozie juggled a ball over the Creek player defending him and then popped the ball over the head of Creek keeper Levi Kline '21 to give Mount Carmel a 1-0 lead. ICS battled back and had a great scoring opportunity when senior midfielder Tyler Sheppard’s pass found sophomore forward Sudan Wilson-Gumbs with space in the box, but Wilson-Gumbs blasted the ball over the crossbar. Wilson-Gumbs redeemed himself, however, with a fine finish from the right of the goal in the 26th minute to equalize at 1-1, with the assist from senior midfielder John Warner. Five and a half minutes later, junior forward Zim Ibe was taken down in the box from behind after receiving a great through ball from sophomore midfielder Danny Swope. Senior co-captain Michael Mercer stepped up to take the penalty kick and buried it in the back of the net to give the Eagles the 2-1 lead heading into half-time.

In the second half, Coach Burns made a slight adjustment to put senior midfielder John Potter at right fullback to help deal with the speed of the Mount Carmel left forward Stephen Copeland who had several times threatened to score in the first half. Potter held Copeland in check for the entire second half. As the clock ticked down, Mount Carmel became more desperate to score, but instead it was the Eagles who got the next goal with 10 minutes to go in the game. Freshman midfielder Brad Spirt found Ibe in front of the goal and Ibe fired the ball past the Cougar’s keeper. This goal seemed to inspire the Eagles to raise the level of their play and just 6 minutes later they scored a pretty goal off a series of one touch passes culminating in a pass from Swope to Sheppard who scored the fourth Creek goal of the game.

The Eagles finished with 12 shots while the Cougars had 7 (and only 2 in the second half). ICS keeper Kline had 5 saves while the Mount Carmel keeper had 3 saves. Corners were 7 to 1 in favor of Mount Carmel. The Eagles are now 5-0 in MIAA C Conference play, and 6-2-1 on the season. The victory over the Cougars was the first time the Eagles have beaten Mount Carmel since the C Conference championship game in the fall 2014 season. Indian Creek next plays local rival Key School at home for Senior Day at 4:15 pm on Friday, October 18.
