Indian Creek Varsity Boys Soccer Shuts Out Third Straight Conference Opponent
On Friday, September 27, the Indian Creek Varsity Boys Soccer team shut out its third straight conference opponent, beating the Chapelgate Yellow Jackets 4-0 behind a goal and an assist from senior tri-captain Michael Mercer.
The Eagles dominated possession from the first whistle but didn’t get the ball into the goal until the 14th minute of the game when Mercer buried a penalty kick earned after a Chapelgate defender deliberately handled the ball in the box. The next goal came in the 25th minute as a result of freshman Brad Spirt winning a 50/50 ball in the midfield. After winning the ball, Spirt spotted an open Mercer further upfield and quickly passed to his fellow center midfielder. Mercer noticed sophomore forward Sudan Wilson-Gumbs isolated with a Yellow Jacket centerback and his subsequent pass enabled Wilson-Gumbs to beat his marker to go one-on-one with the Chapelgate keeper. Wilson-Gumbs kept his composure and slotted the ball into the goal to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Eagles.
The second half saw more of the same dominate possession, but even more frustration for the Eagles as they amassed 15 shots but not a single Eagle scored a goal. Senior forward Jai Richardson was, however, directly responsible for two own goals scored by Chapelgate defenders. In the first instance, Richardson struck a hard shot that was saved into the air by a defender who lost track of the ball as it descended into the box. The defender then accidentally chested the falling ball into his own net as he tried to clear it from the danger zone. Then, with about six minutes to go in the game, Richardson hit another hard shot that first hit one Chapelgate defender before ricocheting off the back of a second defender into the goal.
Junior Levi Kline played the entire game in goal and had one save on one shot by Chapelgate. The Eagles had 31 shots forcing the Yellow Jacket keeper to make 10 saves. Indian Creek also had 15 corner kicks compared to 3 for Chapelgate.
The Eagles climb to 4-0-1 overall, and 3-0 in the MIAA C Conference.
