Eagles FH Beats Herons 3-1

It was a steamy September evening at Indian Creek on Wednesday, September 11, as Varsity Girls Field Hockey hosted The Gunston School Herons. The Eagles were looking to extend their winning ways and came out with strong forechecking and transitional play but it was the Herons who struck first on a fast break goal to take the early lead four minutes into the game.

After a timeout, it was up to the Eagles to respond and the forward line of Sonia Homick '20, Gabby Pardo '22, and Kennedy Leonard '23 did just that. Working hard to step in front of defenders and attack with purpose led to a series of penalty corners for the Eagles. A hard shot from Micah Ferrell-Rogers '23 was saved by the Herons' goalkeeper but Leonard threw herself at the ball and scoring a diving goal to equalize the game going into halftime.

In the second half, the Eagles' continued to press and earn penalty corners. It was Olivia Maisano '21 that finally put them ahead with a well struck hit from the top of the circle into the bottom left corner to make the score 2-1. However, the Herons were not finished and it took a heroic full field sprint from Kylie McLay '22 to stop a break away from becoming a goal shot and keep the Eagles' lead secure. More pressure led to more circle penetrations for the Eagles until Kate Boney '22 calmly fed the ball from the baseline to Ferrell-Rogers who beat the keeper with a powerful shot from the stroke mark making the final score 3-1.

The Eagles return to conference play next Tuesday, traveling to The Catholic High School in Baltimore in their last game before breaking for school trips. Go Eagles!
