2019 Cappies Gala a Big Night for "Lost in Yonkers" Cast & Crew: Justine Krizan '20 Wins TWO Cappies Awards

And the awards go to...Justine Krizan from Indian Creek School!

Sunday, May 19, was an incredible night for the entire cast and crew of Indian Creek's fall play, “Lost in Yonkers,” as they gathered with thousands of high school thespians from the Baltimore area at the Hippodrome theater for the 2019 Cappies Awards gala. The Cappies
are a critics and awards program for high school theater. Each of the 21 high school chapters in the Cappies of Baltimore group forms a critic team of students and designates at least one of its school productions to be its Cappies show which will be attended and reviewed by the critic teams from other schools. Each show is thoroughly reviewed by Cappies critics and students are nominated for Cappies awards that are presented at the annual spring gala.

This year, an impressive 13 Indian Creek students were nominated for 11 awards, including Best Play for the fall production of "Lost in Yonkers." (The Indian Creek spring musical "Newsies" was not produced within the timeframe for Cappies consideration.)  At the gala, the Yonkers cast reunited to perform a scene from the play for the Cappies audience to great accolades. A highlight of the evening came when Indian Creek senior Shannon Sullivan was honored onstage as a four-year critic.

While the Indian Creek contingent was thrilled to have such a large number of students nominated for the prestigious award, the students and faculty directors were overjoyed - but not surprised - when junior Justine Krizan won not just one, but TWO Cappies awards: one for Best Junior Critic and one for Best Comic Actress in a Play for her role as Bella! Yonkers Director Mr. Matt McCormick was confident that the Cappies made the right choice. "We have had some memorable performances by young actors over the years, but Justine’s portrayal of Bella has to rank ranks among the best. She fully transformed into this nuanced, sweet, loving, and troubled young woman as written by Neil Simon.  Justine “found” Bella so early in the process, that in turn, the rest of the cast was able to play off all the intricate idiosyncrasies that Bella had, and by the time the curtain opened, we had a fully developed, and highly believable family on stage. Justine’s Cappies awards are well-deserved and hard-earned, and we are really proud of her and her work."

Being nominated for a Cappies Award is a great honor for a high school student, as multiple actors from 21 schools compete for each award and only four students are nominated in each category. Indian Creek students earned nominations in 11 of the 19 categories in which they were eligible.
