First Grade Teacher Sarah Allen '01 Presents Four Sessions at Future of Education Technology Conference

Last month, first grade teacher (and Indian Creek alumna) Sarah Allen '01 presented not just one, but FOUR sessions at the Future of Education Technology Conference (FETC) in Florida. FETC features an Early Learning Track and focuses on ways to intentionally and purposefully integrate technology into an early learning curriculum.

At the conference, Ms. Allen helped to facilitate the Early Learning Sandbox, which allowed teachers to try new technology in a fun, playful way. She also facilitated an Ozobot station and helped teachers understand the basics of coding and robotics in early learning.

Next, Ms. Allen served on a panel with two other educators about the pros and cons of a 1:1 ipad implementation, ways to implement a class set of iPads, and successes and challenges of technology implementation in the early grades. She also co-presented a session on iPad Engagement in the Early Grades. This session focused on what technology integration is, how to plan for technology integration, lesson ideas, and ways to select relevant technology tools. Finally, Ms. Allen presented a session on Literacy and Coding. This presentation focused on strategies to intentionally align coding and literacy. The presentation featured the pedagogy behind aligning coding and literacy, lesson examples of how coding can be integrated into a literacy block, and tools and resources teachers could use when teaching coding and robotics.

Indian Creek is proud of Ms. Allen, who is internationally recognized as a leader in technology in education for early learners. The School is fortunate to have her share the latest technology and best practices learned at these conferences to her fellow faculty members and students. Ms. Allen felt that her experience at FETC was quite valuable. "It was an amazing learning experience and I was able to bring back numerous ideas that I have already implemented in my classroom around digital publishing, digital citizenship, and virtual and augmented reality." Congratulations to Ms. Allen!
