Maddy Evans '19 carries Indian Creek past Key

Maddy Evans '19 played a large role in Indian Creek’s Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland C Conference championship last year. She did the same on Wednesday to help the Eagles hold off a pesky Key team. Evans scored her team’s first 16 points of the fourth quarter and finished with a game-high 29 points to lead the Eagles to a 60-46 victory over the Obezags.

Indian Creek (3-2) led by just seven points entering the fourth quarter, but Evans took over and scored all but two of her team’s points in the final frame. “It’s good to see that even if we’re struggling a little, we can come back and score when we need to,” said Evans, who added a team-high 15 rebounds. “We’re all here to lift each other up when we’re down. We’re just a strong team.” Evans, who had just seven points in the first half, scored in a variety of ways in the fourth. She drove the baseline several times and scored, finished twice in a span of 30 seconds after grabbing rebounds and even stepped back to hit a 3-pointer. With her team realizing she had the hot hand, she scored down low on feeds from juniors Paige Wells and Kara Mathews to help the Eagles start to pull away. She also converted all three of her free throw attempts, including a three-point plsay that stretched the lead to 10 two minutes into the quarter.

“I would like for her to shoot more,” Indian Creek coach Jamie Cook said. “She’s just a humble young lady that likes to be a good teammate instead of being selfish. We also know that the best teammates are sometimes selfish teammates.”

Indian Creek, which had lost two straight while scoring a combined 57 points, received an early lift from Wells on Wednesday. Wells hit three 3-pointers in the game’s first three minutes and helped the Eagles jump out to a 13-2 lead. They led by nine points after one and by 12 at the half, but the Obezags were able to cut into the lead heading to the final quarter.
Wells finished with 10 points, three rebounds and two assists, Delaney Dignam '19 grabbed 12 rebounds to go with her seven points and freshman Janeiyah Cajudoy had nine rebounds for the Eagles.
