Eagles Earn Hard-Fought Win Over Key School in MIAA Quarterfinal Playoff Game
On Monday, October 30, the ICS boys varsity soccer team travelled to the Key School for an MIAA C Conference quarterfinal playoff game on the Beach Fields. A scoreless first half saw the Obezags take mostly long range shots due to disciplined defense by the Eagles, while the Creek had a couple of dangerous scoring opportunities on the counter attack that failed to convert. With about 27 and a half minutes to go in the second half, however, sophomore John Potter beat the Key left back and raced down the left sideline, drawing several of the remaining members of the Key back line to him. Potter crossed the ball into the box where senior Brandon Harris on a run to the far post deftly struck the ball past the Key keeper. Less than a minute later, junior Carter Mullin knocked in a ball bouncing off the crossbar after junior Colin Brown had played the ball into the penalty area off a direct free kick and the Eagles were leading 2-0. Key still had some fight left, however, and the remaining 27 minutes were a battle as Key sought to get back into the match. With about 13 minutes to go, Key scored to make the game 2-1. Fans of both teams were shrieking and screaming on the sidelines as the ball moved around the field with Key frantically trying to get the equalizer as the Eagles attempted to kill the clock. With 7 seconds to go, Key had a throw in about 18 yards from the end line. The Key throw-in specialist launched the ball into the ICS box, but the ball was headed over the crossbar and time expired as the joyous Eagles celebrated. Eagles goalkeeper sophomore John Warner had 7 saves and dominated the box in the second half to help the Creek preserve the lead, helped by disciplined defense from the center backs, junior Ronan Fanning and sophomore Shaem Spencer.
The Eagles now travel to Essex to take on Mt. Carmel in the MIAA semifinals on Thursday, November 2, at 3:45 pm.
