Author Samara Shanker Visits Indian Creek

On Friday, November 4, Indian Creek students welcomed author Samara Shanker to campus.  Ms. Shanker is the author of the newly released middle grades novel, Naomi Teitelbaum Ends the World. This debut work tells the story of when a magical Bat Mitzvah gift gets out of control and thrusts a girl into a supernatural quest with the fate of the world at stake.

Ms. Shanker spoke with students in grades 3-8, sharing details about what it is like to be an author, and describing her writing process. She explained that she has been making up stories about magic and monsters since she was a kid, often sneaking in extra reading past her bedtime. In graduate school, she began writing stories that reimagined the folklore she had always loved as a kid.  After the morning assembly, Ms. Shanker conducted a Q&A session and autographed copies of her book for students. She then spoke with Middle School students in small groups, and enjoyed time with Upper School students who are interested in pursuing careers in writing.

Thank you to Sarmara Shanker for sharing her talents and enthusiasm with ICS!
