Fourth Grade Students Explore Alternative Energy by Creating Solar Ovens

Indian Creek fourth grade students set out this week to answer the guiding question, "Can we lessen our ecological footprint by using alternative energy, such as solar energy?" The students each created a solar oven using renewable energy sources to cook a food item that would normally be cooked in a regular oven.  Students used the scientific method, to  design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another. After their first attempt to cook using their solar ovens, the students were asked to reflect on what did and did not work in the first test, and then implement modifications that could have a positive effect on the outcome of  the experiment.  To show their work, each student created a videos to guide their teachers and classmates through this project-based culminating activity. Science teacher Heather DeBuse was proud of her students' foray into creating alternative energy sources. "They are amazing, and I'm so proud!"
