Indian Creek Boys Varsity Soccer Drops Hard Fought Match to Sandy Springs Friends
On Friday, October 4, the Eagles Varsity Boys Soccer team lost a close and physical game to the Quakers of Sandy Springs Friends School by the score of 3-1.
The Eagles came out ready to play in the first half and it was a fast-paced, back-and-forth struggle between two evenly matched teams who each struggled to string more than three passes together due to the intense pressure both teams applied when out of possession. Neither team was able to mount much of a threat to the other, although the Quakers had more shots on goal than the Eagles as the half ended in a 0-0 tie.
The second half saw Sandy Spring was get an early score in the second minute, when a cross on the ground from their left midfielder passed by three defenders and the Creek keeper to find the foot of a Quaker forward at the far post for an easy tap in goal. The Eagles came alive after that and it was a dog fight for the rest of the half. The Quakers found the back of the net again about halfway through the half with a well-struck long-range shot that found the upper 90 of the far post giving them a 2-0 lead. The Eagles continued to attack, however, and finally put their own goal on the scoreboard when freshman midfielder Benny Carter pounced on a bobbled ball mishandled by the Quaker keeper to bring the score to 2-1 with 7 minutes to go in the game.
Desperately trying to score the equalizer, the Eagles pressed forward. Alas, a long clear from the Quaker backline in the last minute of the game found the feet of a Quaker forward who beat two Eagle defenders to find himself one-on-one with Eagles keeper Levi Kline and slotted home the third and final goal for Sandy Springs.
The Eagles finished with 11 shots compared to 12 for Sandy Springs while Kline had four saves compared to five for the Quaker keeper. ICS is now 4-1-1 on the year and 3-0 in the conference. The next boys varsity game is tonight at home against Jemicy at 4:15 pm, with a second game at home under the lights at 7 pm on Friday, October 11.
