On Wednesday, September 4, 2019, the Eagles Varsity Boys Soccer team dominated possession throughout the game to beat the Gunston Herons 5-1 behind a brace of goals scored by junior Zim Ibe.
While the Eagles held possession and produced many shots during the first half, the team struggled to put the ball in the back of the net, hitting a post once and the underside of the crossbar as well. Creek finally scored in the 28th minute of the first half when junior centerback Rex Flanagan shot the ball past the Gunston keeper off a cornerkick that saw the ball pinball around the six-yard box before landing at the feet of Flanagan.
The start of the second half saw the Eagles give up a Gunston goal in the eighth minute. Fortunately, at that point Ibe scored two quality goals in less than two minutes. The first was created by a series of passes through the midfield to freshman forward Benny Carter who slotted to ball in to Ibe who blasted it past the Gunston keeper from about 6 yards out. After the restart, senior defensive midfielder Callum Walker quickly caused a Gunston turnover, collected the ball, and then spotted Ibe breaking towards the goal from the right side. Walker’s pass found Ibe who dribbled past the marking defender and launched a rocket toward the side netting of the far post for his second goal and a 3-1 Creek lead.
About two minutes later, senior Jai Richardson notched his first goal of the season when his high pressure caused a turnover in Gunston’s defensive third and he sent a long looping 25-yard shot over the keeper’s head and just under the crossbar. The final goal was scored by frosh Carter off an assist from fellow frosh Brad Spirt in the 26th minute of the half.
Eagles keeper John Warner saw little action during the first half but was called on to make three saves in the second half, including one pointblank reaction save to keep the Herons from taking an unexpected 2-1 lead against the run of play. The Creek took 30 shots, compared to seven for Gunston, and earned seven corners versus two for the Herons. The Eagles are now 1-0 on the season and next play the Fellowship of Christian Athletes on Tuesday, September 10 on the home fields at the Upper School.
