Student Life

Developing the Whole Person

Every aspect of the student experience at Indian Creek School is intentionally created to provide a rich environment for students to develop creative, social, and personal skills while exploring their interests. We create a learning environment where our teachers know their students both as people and as learners. These connections help our students to gain confidence, acquire strategies for managing stress, and enjoy meaningful learning.

We structure the school day to maximize opportunities for participation both before and after school, and our size enables exploration rather than requiring specialization. For students, that means the availability for greater involvement – and greater growth.

  • Daily Schedule

    Lower School (Pre-Kindergarten - Grade 6)
The academic day begins at 8:25 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m.

    Upper School (Grades 7-12)

The academic day begins at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 3:45 p.m.
After School Activities run until 4:45 p.m.

Indian Creek Upper School honors a “late start” time, based on overwhelming research that shows that teenagers need more sleep. Biologically, seventh through twelfth grade brains contain high levels of sleep hormones, which also are secreted later in the evening and remain active later in the morning. Getting enough sleep improves attention, working memory, and logical reasoning ability. Results of this late start include greater alertness, more working memory, improved reasoning, and a more positive mood.

  • After School

Indian Creek offers students of all ages a wide variety of after school enrichment activities as well as unstructured time for children to relax and socialize with their peers. Arts, athletics, academics, and extra-curricular options are available in a safe, supervised environment.

  • Field Trips

The world is our classroom at Indian Creek School! students find that their education does not come simply from the time they spend studying a subject in the classroom. Carefully planned trips bring these lessons to life. Students of all ages take advantage of the School’s optimal location between Baltimore, Annapolis, Washington, DC, and the Chesapeake Bay, to enjoy the opportunity to experience learning outside of classroom walls, and in the world around them. Traditional class trips, including team-building camping trips for grades 4-11 take place annually, as well as curricular based trips. International trips annually give students in grades 6-12 a global perspective that cannot be gained from home.
  • Community Service

From fundraising and hands-on projects in the Lower School to Indian Creek seventh and eighth grades’ partnership with The Light House Shelter of Annapolis, to Upper School food drives and individual volunteer activities, meaningful community service is part of the ethos of helping others that students acquire at Indian Creek.

Jack R. ’10

“My time at ICS gave me the confidence and demeanor I needed to succeed. The “soft skills” I learned played a larger role in my development than any class in particular. I was taught that I should participate in as many activities as I could. The things I learned might not be directly related to my future, but would help me decide what I wanted to do and the person I wanted to become. Indian Creek taught me that success is measured by the person who I am and the amount of good that I can do for those close to me as well as those in need.”
