Integrating Arts throughout Curriculum Enhances Learning

Research has shown that integrating the arts throughout the curriculum enhances learning. Providing a strong arts education strengthens neural connections – more than enough reason to make the arts integral to the curriculum for students of all ages. At Indian Creek, the arts are for everyone, making our program especially vibrant as a result.
Presenting an art project to an audience, and experiencing “stage time” through drama, song, and dance gives students a creative outlet for self-expression and builds confidence necessary for success in life. While both fine and performing arts are interwoven throughout the curriculum, our vibrant art formal art program provides excellent options for students of many interests. Beginning in Pre-Kindergarten, students experience studio art, where they use a variety of media, as part of their weekly schedule. Music and movement classes introduce students to world music, composers, and orchestral instruments and gives children their first experience with performance. Beginning in first grade, drama class joins the program to give students another outlet for self-expression. Instrumental instruction begins as an option in third grade, and all fourth grade students learn to play an instrument. Band and Chorus join the class roster in fifth grade. By seventh grade, the students can participate in Strings Ensemble, Band, Jazz Band, Chorus, Vocal Ensemble, Dance and Guitar classes, in addition to their studio art and music courses. Art Foundations, 2D Studio Art (I-III), Ceramics and Sculpture (I-III), AP Art History, Solo Choir, Music Theory, Recital Class and Acting and Shakespeare courses round out the formal arts offerings beginning in ninth grade.

Signature performance opportunities are available for each grade as well. Lower School holds vocal and instrumental performances as well as an art show each year. Fourth grade students hold a special curriculum-based performance and fifth grade students present Shakespeare plays. An annual fifth and sixth grade musical, sixth through eighth grade musical, ninth through twelfth grade fall drama production and spring musical, as well as a plethora of concerts, recitals, and arts nights combine to create a culture of deep appreciation for the arts.
Indian Creek school is a co-educational, college preparatory independent school, located in Crownsville, Maryland.  Students in Pre-K3 through grade 12 receive a vibrant educational experience based on excellent academics steeped in strong student-teacher connections.
