Indian Creek Eagles Survive Tense Last Inning to Win First at Bell Branch

April 19, 2017

Avenging an earlier season loss, the Indian Creek Eagles got out to a four-run lead and held on for a 6-5 victory over Concordia Prep on Tuesday. The early lead helped propel the Creek to victory and a 2-3 record on the season. Concordia Prep scored three runs during the last two innings in a failed comeback bid.

Concordia Prep captured the lead in top of the first inning, scoring one run. The Eagles, however, scored two in the second on a single by freshan Parker Harris and a wild pitch by the Concordia pitcher to take a lead they would never relinquish. The Creek padded its lead with two more runs in the second on singles by Harris and Maurice Elder ‘20.

Concordia narrowed the lead to two in the fifth when the runner on third ran home on a groundout double play ball hit to second baseman Michael Mercer ‘20 who combined with shortstop Colin Brown ‘19 and first baseman Garrett Odell ‘17 to turn the double play and help cut short a dangerous Concordia rally.

The Eagles added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth, the first off an error by the Concordia left fielder who dropped freshman Tommy Vieiradias’s fly ball, allowing Colin Brown to score. The second, and game winning, run was scored by junior Brandon Harris off a wild pitch.

The last inning was tense as Concordia had two runners on base with two outs when an infield error by the Eagles on a groundball to third allowed two runs to score, making it a one run game. The next batter was hit by a pitch and the Creek was looking at the tying runner at third and the go-ahead runner at first, still trying to get the final out. Fortunately, Elder combined with first-baseman John Warner ‘20  to pick off the runner at first to end the inning and the game.

Warner earned the win for Indian Creek Eagles. He went five and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs, two hits, and striking out four. Elder recorded the last four outs to earn the save for the Eagles. Shertzer took the loss for Concordia Prep. He tossed four innings, allowing six runs, nine hits, and striking out six.

Indian Creek collected ten hits. Parker Harris, Garrett Odell, and Brandon Harris each collected multiple hits for Indian Creek Eagles. Harris went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Eagles in hits.

The Eagles next play at Bell Branch on Thursday, April 20, at 3:30 pm against Beth Tfiloh.
