Lower School January Newsletter

Thank you again to all of you who participated in this year’s food drive! Everyone did a wonderful job and the students were thrilled to wear their pajamas on Thursday to celebrate their accomplishments! We could not have had such a successful food drive without the help of Lisa Smith, our Student Government Associations, fifth grade students Mya Duckett and Sierra Stevenson, Erik Kornmeyer, and so many wonderful parent volunteers. We thank each of you for your support, as together we donated nearly 6,000 pounds of food, soaps, shampoos, toothpastes, and more to the Anne Arundel County Resource and Food Bank.

As we look ahead and continue to enjoy a variety of weather, we would like to remind you to please send your child with warm clothes each day, including long pants or leggings and a heavy winter coat, hat, and gloves as needed. Please remember that students go outside in most weather, so it is important that they are dressed appropriately each day. While all students do need to wear sneaker-type shoes in the building each day, boots may be sent for outdoor use when necessary.

In partnership with the PTO, we invite you to join us for our first Lower School Coffee and Conversation on February 3. We are excited about these upcoming events. Please click here to learn more about these upcoming events. We hope to see you there!

Wishing you well,
Amy Benson

A Month of Gratitude

Thank you to all of you for joining us during our recent Halloween festivities! The children had a wonderful time celebrating together and building various structures, including marshmallow catapults. As we have increased our STEM opportunities at the Creek, these celebrations led right into our first annual Punkin Chunkin event! The children brought in a variety of pumpkins and were thrilled to send these flying across the fields with their peers, while learning about simple machines and catapults.

As we reflect on the month, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the PTO and faculty for all of the work that went into organizing our recent Parent Education Symposium. It was an incredible day, including many great sessions and conversations!

Tomorrow, we look forward to a wonderful PK-5th grade student assembly on gratitude and encourage you to ask your child about this as well. We are excited to see each of you at our upcoming Parent Information Night on November 15, as well as our Parent-Teacher conferences later this month.

We wish you a very special Thanksgiving with family and friends.

Wishing you well,

Amy Benson

Lower School September Newsletter

Welcome to a new school year!

We are so excited to see everyone at ICS as we begin the 2016-17 school year!

Everyone has been settling in this week and learning the new routines in their classrooms. This morning, we all came together for a Pre-K through 5th grade assembly. Please ask your child to tell you about it! Len Langrick and Anita O’Connor began the assembly by leading the students in two songs and we then shared a story together. Our story, Appelemando’s Dreams, highlighted the importance of always dreaming and bringing life and color to your dreams. The students will be discussing and sharing ideas from this story in their classrooms and are working to bring their dreams to life in the hallways as well!

As we prepare for the weeks ahead, we would like to remind you that we are currently collecting gently used books for our upcoming 1st-5th grade team building events on September 9. Students will receive a book and Flavor Ice during this event. If you have any gently used books that you would like to donate, please drop them off at the front desk.

We look forward to a wonderful year ahead and ask that you please mark your calendars for our upcoming Early Childhood Night and 1st-5th Grade Back to School Night. We enjoyed seeing everyone last night and look forward to seeing you again for these events!

Wishing you well,

Amy Benson

Lower School May Newsletter

Happy May!

We hope that everyone is doing well and enjoyed the recent break in the rain over the weekend!

As we look back over the past month, we enjoyed our recent PK-3rd grade Grandparents and Special Guests activities. The children had a wonderful time performing for their guests and we thank both you and all of the teachers who made this event possible. We also enjoyed a wonderful Earth Day Immersion Day in our Early Childhood program and a shared Earth Day Celebration between our Lower and Middle School students.

On the same day, the Lower School students took part in our third annual Lower School Talent Show, which was a huge success!

As we look ahead to the coming month, it is incredible to believe we are fast approaching the close of the year and our many end of the year events. As noted on the calendar, we look forward to combining our LS Art Show, Vocal Concert, and Instrumental Concert on June 10. We hope you will all be able to join us for these events following morning carpool! As the end of the year also brings a number of other special activities, we ask that you please take a close look at this month’s Dates to Note. We further encourage you to check our website for our online Summer Camp brochure if you have not yet reviewed our summer camp and BLinc offerings!

We thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you at several events in the coming month!

Lower School April Newsletter

Happy April!

We hope that everyone enjoyed a great deal of rest, relaxation, and family time during the recent Spring Break. It is nice to be able to enjoy the warmer weather and to see that we have had a few days when the students have been able to enjoy the playground without jackets. We look forward to such days increasing in the coming months!

As we look back over the past month, we enjoyed our recent fourth and fifth grade Grandparents and Special Guests Day at Indian Creek. Within this day, we enjoyed the fifth grade Shakespeare performance and commend our fifth grade students for taking on their parts with such great success. Moving forward, we look forward to our upcoming PK-3rd grade Grandparents and Special Guests activities on April 29.

As student report cards arrive home this week via kid-mail, we would like to thank you for coming to our recent conferences to discuss your child’s progress. We also encourage you to contact your child’s teachers directly with any questions you may have regarding report cards. As our first through fifth grade students complete their MAP tests, we will also be gathering data and hope to send this data home at the end of the month. Students who have missed testing sessions due to absences will continue to make up tests upon their return to school. We have included additional information about the MAP test on the third page of this newsletter.

As we move into April, we would like to remind you to please check the main school calendar for additional details on the David A. Nagey 5K on April 24. Please take a moment to submit your registration if you have not yet had the opportunity to do so, as we look forward to seeing all of our PK-12th grade families at this wonderful ICS event!

Wishing you well,

Lower School March Newsletter

Happy Spring!

As the weather gets warmer, we turn our thoughts to spring and are excited to see that the students are finally able to enjoy playing outside again!

Looking back over the past month, we certainly enjoyed a wonderful STEAM Day on February 19 for all students from PK3-5th grade. We hope that you were able to discuss this day with your child and that your child was able to share some highlights about what they learned in the course of the day. We have enjoyed incorporating more STEAM activities into our curriculum and are excited about the endless possibilities that lie ahead.

Looking forward, we are excited to welcome our fourth and fifth grade grandparents and special guests to Indian Creek on Friday. Our fifth graders are particularly enthusiastic to share their Shakespeare performance at this time! We look forward to these wonderful events and feel privileged to have so many special guests with us to celebrate.

Moving into the following week, we would like to remind you to please sign up for a conference time slot if you have not yet had the opportunity to do so. As teachers will be sharing student portfolios at this time, we hope all parents can make it to campus for this opportunity.

As everyone heads into Spring Break, we would also like to remind you that 1st-5th grade students will begin MAP testing the week of March 28. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or the LS Office with any questions you may have.

Wishing you well,

Amy Benson

Happy Valentines Day!

It has been wonderful to see how much all of the students have enjoyed their Valentine’s parties! The past two days were filled with so much excitement and energy. In addition to the Valentine’s parties, we are also thrilled to announce that Sarah Allen won the CITE award!

First Grade Teacher (and alumna) Sarah Allen ’01 was awarded the 2016 Pearson Online Learning Excellence Award for her significant contributions to encouraging further innovation in online learning. Sarah was chosen from among over 60 nominees and five national finalists, including faculty and administrators from K-12, higher education, and the corporate environment who have demonstrated measurable best practices and innovation in online learning. Indian Creek Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Program Director and Upper School Science Teacher Stephen Roth was also one of five finalists nominated for this prestigious award. Both Sarah and Stephen were nominated as educators for their work in helping to launch Indian Creek School’s blended learning (BLinc) initiative that has helped to put our school at the forefront of blended learning at independent schools in the region.
Cite awards honor educators and administrators who have demonstrated measurable best practices and innovation in online education. Sarah was presented with the 2016 Cite award this week at Pearson’s online learning conference, Cite 2016, in Amelia Island, Florida. As part of Pearson’s commitment to inspiring and supporting excellence in online education, the company will donate $1,500 to the scholarship fund of Sarah’s choice. Happy New Year!

We hope you had a wonderful winter break, filled with many special moments with family and friends. The students are excited to be back and there is a great energy in the school.

I would like to again thank everyone who participated in this year’s food drive, as Indian Creek families donated over 7,000 pounds of food and other needed items to the Anne Arundel County Food & Resource Bank. This is a record-breaking number and we could not have done it without the enthusiasm of our PTO Co-Chairs, the leadership of our students through the Middle and Upper School SGAs, 635 gracious students, 50+ parent volunteers, our faculty, and you. As a celebration of this accomplishment, Lower School students will have a Pajama Day on Friday, January 29. Students are welcome to also bring blankets as all students will have the chance to read with their book buddies in the afternoon. We look forward to this wonderful celebration!

We are also excited to announce our new winter BLinc offerings.

Lastly, as we have entered into colder weather in 2016, we would like to remind you to please send your child with warm clothes each day. With the type of weather we have experienced this week, children should wear long pants or leggings and also bring a heavy winter coat, hat, and gloves each day. Please remember that students go outside in most weather, so it is important that they are dressed appropriately each day. While all students do need to wear sneaker-type shoes in the building each day, boots may be sent for outdoor use in the event of snow.

Wishing you a wonderful 2016!
